Jazz Journey with Greg: Misha Mengelberg In-Person
Join series moderator Greg Drusdow to view the North American Premiere of the 65-minute long jazz documentary film "MISHA enzovoort" (MISHA and so on) which will be presented using a Region 2 (Europe) DVD and is in Dutch with English subtitles. This movie was directed by Cherry Duyns.
This film covers the impact of Alzheimer's on the creativity of Misha Mengelberg - the band leader of the Netherlands-based ICP (Instant Composers Pool) Orchestra. It is a serious and touching film that shows how the tragic impact of dementia can be devastating for a jazz musician on the road whose improvising and communications skills become compromised by Alzheimer's. It also shows how his jazz band lovingly unites behind him as his contributions decline until they are reduced to a level demonstrated during his last moving "farewell" concert appearance in London.
Some might see this as heartbreaking, but it also is uplifting to witness the presence of an individual battling with Alzheimer's, who recognizes that this disease has caused a state of war with his brain while he kept his spirit persisting up until the end of his 46- year long career leading the ICP Orchestra.
Thomas Herberer, the ICP Orchestra trumpeter who is interviewed in the film, will join us via Zoom for a post film discussion about Misha Mengelberg.
