New Jersey in the Gilded Age

New Jersey in the Gilded Age In-Person

Fans of the popular HBO series, The Gilded Age, now in its second season, will not want to miss the Historical Society of Moorestown’s New Jersey History Speaks Lecture Series December event. Melissa Ziobro, Specialist Professor of Public History at Monmouth University’s Department of History and Anthropology will give a presentation on what life was like in New Jersey in the late 19th century, the period Mark Twain labeled “The Gilded Age”.

During this period Americans who achieved wealth celebrated it as never before. In New York, the opera, the theatre, and lavish parties consumed the ruling class’s leisure hours, as the HBO series faithfully depicts, but how did the Gilded Age manifest itself in New Jersey during this period?

Professor Ziobro will discuss New Jersey in the late 1800’s including who were the powerful and influential families in the Garden State and what they were up to at this time.

This program is part of the New Jersey History Speaks lecture series.
